Is NCLAM right for you?

NCLAM is a unique UCSD faculty development program created to support junior Health Sciences faculty through the initial years of adjustment after they choose academic careers. The requirements for participation are:

  • a junior faculty appointment (greater than 50%)
  • in any of the UC faculty series (Ladder, In Residence, Clinical X, Adjunct, and Health Sciences Clinical)
  • for less than five years.

Eleven classes of junior faculty members have graduated from the NCLAM Program. After completing the seven-month course, the 179 graduates rated themselves significantly higher in all areas of professional academic skills. They felt more confident in their academic roles at UCSD as well as their skills in education, research and administrative responsibilities.

NCLAM begins with sixteen Friday morning sessions covering topics ranging from UCSD expectations for academic promotion, to skill development in teaching and research, to professional development and leadership training. During the second part of the program, each participant chooses a focused faculty development project and works with a specially matched senior mentor. The Office of the Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences provides funding to reimburse each junior faculty member's department for his or her time during the seven month program.
